CO2 Foundation has supported ocean-based weather attribution work at Climate Central since 2022. In August, the organization launched the Climate Shift Index: Ocean — a new system that quantifies the influence of climate change on ocean surface temperatures.
Climate Central’s expanded attribution capabilities now cover the entire surface of Earth!
The Climate Central team has developed its new CSI: Ocean map tool, which will help trusted messengers illustrate the climate change fingerprints associated with hurricane tracks and marine impacts. Linking specific patterns and instances of ocean warming to climate change will help strengthen climate messaging around many important patterns, starting with hurricanes and also focusing on coral bleaching and impacts on fisheries and marine ecosystems.
More details about the science and applications of this system are available HERE. And HERE is a clip of NBC Bay Area meteorologists sharing this information with their viewers.
Congratulations to Climate Central for contributing this important tool to meteorologists and other climate communicators around the world.
